Welcome To Bar Harbor, Maine>
The largest village on Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor which borders Acadia National Park offers its visitors a wide array of lodging accommodations such as inns and bed & breakfasts, hotels and motels, cottages, homes, cabins, plus RV and camping sites.
In addition to the many places to stay during your visit, Bar Harbor has so very, very much to see and do with its restaurants, shops, boutiques oceanarium, galleries and museums, whale watching, nature cruises, lobster and seal watching, sailing, kayaking, biking, plus much more.
The Art Deco Criterion Theatre in downtown Bar Harbor seating almost 900 and built in 1932 features first-run and art movies plus live stage events and concerts. Reel Pizza, a twin theatre showing first-run movies with pizzas', calzones and other foods for "dining while watching" is located downtown Bar Harbor across from the Village Green Park. In additon to Bar Harbor's two movie theaters there are live stage plays, and a comedy shop.
The world famous Jackson Laboratory Genetic Research Center and College of the Atlantic are both located on the outskirts of Bar Harbor at opposite ends of the village.
Several entrances to Acadia National Park are located in and around Bar Harbor. "The Park", as called by locals, has 57 miles of carriage roads (which are open to cross-country skiing in winter) and over 120 miles of hiking and biking trails. You can tour the park aboard one of the many free propane-powered Island Explorer shuttle buses that have loading and unloading spots all over Mount Desert Island and in Acadia National Park. These free shuttle buses powered by propane are designed to cut down on auto fumes and congestion that harm the ecological balance.
